How I work with clients:

No two people are alike. Each person has a different personality, needs, goals, history, background, life experience, values. I prefer to individually tailor a treatment approach and plan for each client. You can count on both empathy and honesty as we explore situations, patterns, and behaviors that might be interfering with you living the life you desire.

There are a number of evidenced based treatment approaches that mental health providers are trained to use. While some specific types of therapy have been demonstrated to work more effectively with particular clinical concerns, generally speaking, empirically validated treatment approaches are effective with a wide variety of mental health challenges. I have found in 20 years of clinical work that determining an approach in response to the client’s presenting concerns, personal preferences, and priorities helps facilitate effective therapy. Some clients prefer space to bring what is most important in the moment into therapy, while others have specific goals and prefer a tangible skills-based approach. I have been trained in a number of treatment modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Relational Therapy, Culturally Sensitive Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy and Existential Therapy. Generally, I would describe myself as an Integrative clinician that pulls from relevant therapies based on the client's needs.

How long does therapy take?

It depends on several factors. First, what are your goals? Some people have just one thing they want to focus on, and have something specific in mind. Others may feel depressed, or have always felt they overanalyze things, but aren’t sure why. Another consideration is the length of time that the concern has been going on. Is what is bothering you something you’ve been dealing with for months, or for years? One more important piece is the level of impact, and the types of symptoms and responses you’re experiencing. The more your life is impacted by your concern (is it impacting work/school, relationships, your ability to get things done, or even get out of bed some days?) the more work it may take to get you feeling better. Additionally, if someone has had a past trauma, or a previous untreated history of depression, anxiety, or other illness, the problems can sometimes layer or lead to a cumulative impact. Just as each person is different, circumstances will vary. Since I work collaboratively with my clients, we’ll talk about this together as we create a plan.

Ways therapy can help:

  • Provide a non judgmental, safe environment, where you can honestly share concerns, thoughts, and feelings (containing uncomfortable thoughts and feelings can feel burdensome and sometimes lead to feelings of shame)

  • Assist in identifying patterns or events from the past that impact present behavior and that can provide a framework for change

  • Explore how relationships, both past and present, might be impacting you and help you determine new ways to interact with people in your life

  • Identify unhelpful thinking patterns or inaccurate belief systems that may cause you to be stuck (our tendency as humans is to reinforce these over time)

  • Help you identify reasonable goals for change and provide support to you in meeting them

  • Learn alternative ways to manage emotions and behaviors through new coping skills

  • Discover environmental or systems factors that may be impacting your wellbeing and develop a plan for creating a healthier life
